Eco-Ecole Comes to Le Lycée

Posted June 24, 2010

After their annual post-school year Potluck Lunch the staff of the Middle School and the High School were introduced to the international Eco-Ecole project. M. Zala, Head of the Century City Campus, is spearheading this program which has existed since 1983 as part of the Foundation for European Education in Europe. For years, Le Lycée has participated with the French Ministry of Education's "projet d’école" of sustainability and environmental awareness. However, this was done in small measures without a central plan for the entire school.

That is until, M. Zala attended workshops, researched Eco-Ecole, and consulted with Le Lycée's Administration for the viability of bringing this dynamic program to our school. With the introduction of this program, our loosely organized environmental efforts take on a more structured focus with a school-wide plan.

Starting in September, 2010, the school will institute the Seven Step Program to bring both ecological action and education to our students and general community. Eco-Ecole will not only involve the students, but the staff (teaching and non-teaching), and parents of our students. The school will establish a steering committee that will include members from all parts of the school community and will create an action plan for the year. M. Zala estimates that the steering committee will be meeting about three or four times a year.

In June, 2011, the Eco-Ecole officials will review the school and, with the completion of the action plan, will credential Le Lycée as an Eco school. This process is repeated yearly.

The school must not only choose and complete projects to improve the environment, but they must link these activities to Le Lycée's curriculum. This experience will easily be something our students will remember with pride as they carry the lessons of responsibility taught from this experience into the rest of their lives.
